Winterising: 4 Important Tasks to Do Now
Autumn is here, and for many boat owners, it's time to start preparing for the cold season. To ensure that your sailboat or motorboat makes it through the winter unharmed, there are some essential steps to take. In addition to hauling out and thorough cleaning, there are other crucial measures you shouldn’t overlook. We present the 4 most important to-dos that you shouldn't forget.
1. Disconnect and Store the Batteries
Proper care of your boat’s batteries is especially important in winter to prevent frost damage and deep discharge. First, both the service battery and the starter battery should be disconnected and removed. Next, check the charge level and ensure that the batteries are fully charged before storage. Store your batteries in a frost-free location to prevent damage from cold temperatures, and use the winter months to keep them fully charged, which helps extend their lifespan.
2. Dehumidify the Air
Moisture is the biggest enemy during the winter months. To prevent mold growth and unpleasant odors, it is advisable to dehumidify the air inside the boat. Depending on the size of the boat, using multiple dehumidifiers can be a simple and effective solution. This is especially important in enclosed spaces such as cabins or storage compartments, as it helps prevent condensation and protects the boat from potential damage.
3. Winterizing the Cooling and Water Systems
A crucial step in winterizing your boat is draining and protecting the water and cooling systems. First, all tanks—such as the water tank, hoses, boiler, and water pump—must be completely emptied to prevent frost damage. Additionally, the cooling system should be treated with antifreeze to protect the engine from potential damage caused by freezing temperatures. We also recommend performing engine and transmission maintenance at least once a year.
4. Have Your Safety Equipment Serviced
Regular maintenance of safety equipment is essential to ensure onboard safety. Life jackets and life rafts should be inspected at least once a year. Autumn is the perfect time to have this maintenance done. Simply drop off your safety equipment at our shop, and pick it up in the spring—fully serviced and ready for use.
